Traversing the water of the debt consolidation world can be a bit scary if done by yourself. Finding a trusted individual to guide you through the minefield is a great way to ensure future success in your personal finances. Below is a list of ways to ensure that you find beneficial debt consolidation assistance.

Top 5 Things To Look For In Debt Consolidation Assistance

When going about finding a person to help you through the debt consolidation process it is good to go through a quick checklist to ensure that the person you have chosen will truly help lead you to the promised land. With that in mind here is a 5 step process to help lead you down the correct path.

1) Knowledge in debt consolidation - Make sure to ask the person you are entrusting with your debt future a battery of questions pointed directly at their knowledge in debt consolidation. Do they have a working knowledge of all of the alternatives out there. Have them list them off to you and go through a brief description of each. Make sure they at least sound like they know what they are talking about. Do they only have one option at their disposal? If so that would be a red flag that they aren't fully knowledgable and at least partially out for your best interests.

2) Experience - Ask for a detailed description of their experience in the field. How long have they been doing this. Do they have any proof of that longevity? Can they cite specific examples of how the debt consolidation game has changed and remained the same over time? Perhaps they can compare and contrast companies they have worked for or are the key competitors of their place of employment.

3) Past success stories - I would suggest asking for contact information on a few poeple that they have worked with in the past. It would be highly recommended to follow up and actually contact or better yet go and meet with these people to ensure that they are happy, satisfied and on their way to a better life. Even if you don't follow up, if you press them for information and they can't deliver any it should send up a red flag.

4) Have them go through the debt consolidation pros and cons with you - If they are willing to walk you through the pros and cons (especially the cons) of debt consolidation you can generally rest easy at night.  if they are trying to pull a fast one on you they likely won't mention all the negative aspects of debt consolidtation and try to focus on the positives only.  Focusing on the positive is a great way to go through life, but a moderate amount of risk assessment is always prudent.

5) Gut feel - I never underestimate the general feeling you get from a person. Even if everything else appears to be on the up and up but something just doesn't seem to fit right or your get a suspicious feeling in your stomach I would run for the fences. As crazy as it seems, your gut feel from people's normal reactions and mannerisms are normally right. Better to find a person that matches all of the above criteria but also give you a sense of ease.
